The results of the 1987 surveys in New Mexico (Platania and
Bestgen 1988) and Utah (Meyer and Moretti 1988) indicated that a
more intense survey of the ichthyofauna of the San Juan River was
warranted. We developed a two-year study plan (1988-1989) for
this purpose, with specific objectives being:
1. To document the presence, distribution, and
abundance of the Colorado squawfish, razorback
sucker, and Gila spp. (target species) in the San
Juan River, New Mexico.
2. To document the distribution and abundance of non-
target fish species in the San Juan River, New
Mexico.
3. To describe the macro- and microhabitat associations
of target species in the San Juan River, New Mexico.
4. To evaluate the potential for the San Juan River,
New Mexico, to contribute to the recovery of
federally and state endangered, threatened, or
sensitive species.
This report is a summary of the results of 1988 field work and
data analysis.
2
