Introduction <br />Several species and subspecies of fish native to the waters of Colorado <br />have been designated by the Secretaty of the Interior as threatened or <br />endangered. The latest list, United States List of Endangered Fauna, <br />1974, designates three species as endangered: <br />Scientific Name Common Name <br />1. Salmo clarki stomias <br />2. Gila cypha <br />3. Ptychocheilus Lucius <br />Greenback cutthroat trout <br />Humpback chub <br />Colorado squawfish <br />The Fish and Wildlife Service has yet to complete a threatened species <br />list for U.S., but will probably include most of the species on their <br />1973 publication "Threatened Wildlife of the United States." On the <br />threatened list for Colorado they included: <br />Scientific Name <br />l?i.mmr.n TT7mo <br />4. Salmo clarki virginalis Rio Grande cutthroat trout <br />and on the "Status - Undeterminined Fishes" list: <br />Scientific Name <br />5. Salmo clarki macdonaldi <br />6. Salmo clarki pleuriticus <br />7. Xyrauchen texanus <br />Common Name <br />Yellowfin cutthroat trout <br />Colorado cutthroat trout <br />Humpback sucker <br />In addition, the Endangered Species Act of 1973 gives individual states <br />the authority to designate and conserve those species they consider <br />threatened or endangered within state boundaries (Sec. 6,c). Colorado <br />Department of Natural Resources and Division of Wildlife (DOW) have <br />prepared a document "Endangered Animals Cooperative Agreement Applica- <br />tion; Legal Authority, Program Description and Proposed Research and <br />Management Plans" dated November, 1974, in compliance with Section 6 of <br />the Endangered Species Act, listing those species they believe in trou- <br />ble and spelling out preliminary management plans for restoration. <br />The State of Colorado's endangered species list for fish includes: <br />Scientific Name <br />1. Ptychocheilus lucius <br />2. Gila cypha <br />3. Gila elegans <br />4. Xyrauchen texanus <br />('_-_ TTnmo <br />Colorado squawfish <br />Humpback chub <br />Bonytail chub <br />Humpback sucker
