1
1
1
1
1

measurement used to quantify production at site locations. Biomass values were obtained
by drying the macroinvertebrates from each sample in an oven at 1000 C for 24-hours or
until all water content had evaporated. Biomass was reported as the mean dry weight of
macroinvertebrates per square meter at each site location. Biomass values provide
information regarding production in terms of weight of macroinvertebrates produced by
each habitat. Density and biomass provide a means of measuring and comparing
productivity at each sampling location.
The final measurement of macroinvertebrate community structure will be an analysis of
invertebrate functional feeding groups. Aquatic macroinvertebrates will be categorized
according to feeding strategy to determine the relative proportion of various groups. The
proportion of certain functional feeding groups in the macroinvertebrate community can
provide insight to various types of stress in river systems (Ward and Kondratieff 1992)
2001 Results

1

In 2001, macroinvertebrate sampling and analyis was conducted for four sites in the
spring and five sites in the fall. An additional site was added for the Roaring Fork River
above the Fryingpan confluence in the fall. Analysis has been completed for two sites in
the spring. Analysis is continuing and the remaining two spring sites and the five fall
sites will be completed in the end of 2001 or beginning of 2002. Preliminary results of
macroinvertebrate sampling are presented in Table 4. Raw data and species lists are
provided in Appendix B. Interpretation of the results at the completed sites suggests that
these sites have excellent water quality and support a large number of
macroinvertebrates, however complete analysis of all sites will be conducted before
conclusions are made.
Draft 2001 Task Summary Report Page 18
Miller Ecological Consultants, Inc.
