I
Substrate composition. Substrate composition was visually estimated at all
verticals both wet and dry. Substrate was denoted for the following categories:
P1,
Grass/terrestrial vegetation
Aquatic vegetation
Silt
' Sand
Small gravel (0.25 - 1.0 inch)
' Large Gravel (>1.0 - 3.0 inch)
Cobble (>3.0 - 10.0 inch)
Boulder (>I 0.0 inch)
Bedrock

The substrate was categorized by dominant and subdominant size class. This
provided the information required for the salmonid habitat suitability criteria.
This method of substrate categorization can be adapted to most of the usual
substrate codes in the existing habitat suitability criteria for salmonid species.
C
C
i
ll
over.
over was v
sua
y estimated by percentage at each vertical. We used the
following cover types:
Velocity Refuge - any instream object that provides a velocity refuge for
h
i
f
t
e spec
es o
interest. This could include objects such as boulders, root
wads, large woody debris or other such objects.
Visual Isolation - any object that provides visual isolation for the species
of interest such as overhanging vegetation, undercut banks, or other such
items.

Draft 2001 Task Summary Report Page 7
Miller Ecological Consultants, Inc.
