The value of the Interagency Standardized Monitoring Program to monitor the
recovery of the Colorado squawfish population is dependent on the recovery goals
that are set for the population. Population changes of 200% or greater can be
readily detected-using the current monitoring program. It is important that the
recovery goals carefully consider the biology of the species concerned. Because
Colorado squawfish are slow growing and long lived we would expect significant
changes in the adult population to only occur over relatively long periods of
time. Although management activities should strive to enhance Colorado squawfish
reproductive success, large numbers of age-0 Colorado squawfish collected in
the fall cannot be considered recovery. Recovery can only occur with a sustained
increase in the adult population. Monitoring should occur long after the desired
population level is reached to ensure that it is not a short-term pulse that will
decline as fish from a single, very successful year class leave the population.
20
