B, Table 22). Increased reproduction over an extended period will be important
to the recovery of Colorado squawfish. However, examination of the relationship
between variation in reproductive success and various environmental variables
will be an important step in determining how to improve spawning success.
Therefore, it will be important to reliably detect year-to-year variations in
reproductive success. The current monitoring program can accomplish this at
differences of 100% or greater. Observed fluctuations in fall CPUE of age-0
Colorado squawfish have exceeded 1000% (Jones and Tyus 1985).
DISCUSSION
Although a large body of data collected before ISMP exists, relatively little
of it can be reasonably compared with that of the monitoring program. All the
previously collected electrofishing data was collected with such a wide variety
of sampling techniques and over various portions of the sampling reaches that
meaningful comparisons cannot be made. However, the fall young-of-the-year
sampling conducted by the Fish and Wildlife Service is comparable if the older
data are partitioned carefully. The sampling design used by the Fish and
Wildlife Service formed the basis for the sampling design of ISMP. The ISMP
generally has more restrictive specifications on the sampling design that in the
previously collected data. However, the combined data can be used to examine
the relationships between annual reproductive success of Colorado squawfish and
the environmental variables that might affect it.
19
