Title of Proposal: <br />An evaluation of Colorado squawfish recruitment <br />II. Relationship to Recovery Program/Ranking Factors: <br />Management and future recovery of Colorado squawfish would benefit from an <br />evaluation of the survival of younger age-classes with respect to <br />prevailing environmental conditions. <br />III. Study Goals, Objectives, End Product: <br />To determine relative abundance of young (age-0 to age-1) Colorado <br />squawfish with respect to river conditions in autumn, early spring (pre- <br />runoff) and late spring or early summer (post runoff_, based on existing <br />data and information. <br />To evaluate environmental factors that might influence estimates of <br />standing crops of young squawfish from the autumn to spring. <br />To determine behavioral patterns in young squawfish that might influence <br />their vulnerability to sampling gear. <br />To evaluate the relative abundance of various size-classes of Colorado <br />squawfish and identify data gaps and future research needs. <br />IV. Study area: Green River <br />V. Study Methods/Approach: <br />Past efforts to determine overwintering survival rates for young Colorado <br />squawfish in their first year of life have not been successful; i.e., <br />statistical testing has not demonstrated a significant difference in <br />standing crops (Tyus and Haines 1991). However, past studies have relied <br />only on an evaluation of the catch-per-unit-effort in Autumn relative to <br />catch-per-unit-effort in the spring. New methods need to be developed <br />that would provide a reasonable estimate of overwintering <br />mortality/ survival for young Colorado squawfish to aid in evaluating <br />potential differences in survival with different winter flows.
