Task 10 An evaluation of fish predation in backwater habitats in
the
Green River.
Description of work:
Task 10 is a requested new start (RIP new emphasis: Management
of Non-native Fishes) under the lead of the FWS. The main
purpose of the study is to determine if competitive interaction
between introduced and native fishes is a significant factor
contributing to the decline of endangered species populations.
The project will examine fish competition in Colorado squawfish
nursery habitats by determining if fish predation in backwaters
has an impact on the structure and function of benthic and
planktonic communities. Specific objectives of the study
include:
1) Determine invertebrate densities, changes in backwater
community structure, and production estimates for the
dominant invertebrate species.
2) Evaluate the relationships between river flows and standing
crops of food organisms.
3) Evaluate the role of fishes in structuring invertebrate
communities habitat exclusion.
4) Evaluate resource competition by fishes in backwater
habitats.
5) Design studies to evaluate exploitative and interference
competition as needed.
The study is needed to help determine the significance of
species interactions so that intelligent management strategies,
including flow manipulation can be devised.
- Hypotheses to be Tested: 3,4,7,9,12
Deliverables:
An annual report for the project would be submitted by the end
of the fiscal year.
1992 Budget':
-Labor $13,500
-Travel $ 300
-Equipment $ 200
-Total $14,000
Habitat Management - Research/Restoration
Task 11.
