1 <br />11 Description of work: <br />A requested new start Hypothesis Testing study (RIP new <br />emphasis: Management on Non-native Fishes) by the UDWR and L.FL. <br />Objectives of the study would be: <br />1) To identify and assess factors that limit the distribution <br />and abundance of all non-salmonid, non-native fishes by <br />taking a life history and zoogeographical perspective. <br />2) To evaluate the potential impact of northern pike on 'YOY <br />Colorado squawfish in Utah. <br />3) To identify and evaluate potential methods for selectively <br />controlling the impacts of non-native on endangered fish. <br />Researchers from the LFL will review existing literature <br />regarding factors that limit the distribution and abundance of <br />non-natives in their historical range. Data sources would <br />include existing literature, endangered fish data bases, and <br />laboratory and museum collections. UDWR researchers will <br />investigate potential impact of northern pike on YOY Colorado <br />squawfish in the Green River, Utah. Bioenergetics models will <br />be used to estimate the prey base necessary to support northern <br />pike populations and investigate potential impact of northern <br />pike populations on Colorado squawfish recruitment to adult <br />stages. UDWR will also identify and evaluate potential methods <br />for selectively controlling non-native fishes, including flow <br />manipulation and removal. This study could potentially be used <br />to refine flow recommendations for every season by identifying <br />possible flows which would inhibit undesirable non-native <br />species. <br />- Hypotheses to be Tested: 3,9,12 <br />Deliverables: <br />LFL will submit a summary report by the end of the fiscal year <br />detailing potential non-native fish management strategies that <br />could be evaluated.
