Another potential site has been located in
the Rio Grande River Basin and is being evaluated using established criteria.
Three potential sites for long-range propagation facilities were identified in .
Utah: Gandy Warm Springs, West Central Utah near the Nevada border; Wahweap
State Fish Hatchery, Colorado River Basin; and Ouray Endangered Fish Facility,
Green River Basin. Several of these sites will be developed into propagation
facilities for aquatic species in Colorado and Utah. These facilities would
be suitable for the culture and rearing of endangered Colorado River fishes.
No Program action was taken on these potential sites because the States of
Colorado and Utah are proposing construction of propagation facilities for
native fishes that would be suitable for the propagation of endangered
Colorado River fishes.
Th
C
l
d
Di
i
i
f Wildlif
ti
ti
h
t
N
A
e
o
ora
o
v
s
on o
a
ve
c
e.
a
qua
as proposed to construc
Wildlife Propagation Facility to meet their responsibilities for all species
of wildlife. In addition, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is
proposing to construct several, smaller Native Fish Propagation Facilities.
These facilities will meet essential criteria for the propagation of the
endangered Colorado River fishes.

Recommendations Related to the Propagation of Endangered Fishes in the Upper
Colorado River Basin
Specific recommendations were made for Program review and action. These are
not listed in priority order but are numbered as they were identified in this
plan. Page numbers in parentheses refer to the page where the box with the
specific recommendation was made. Some boxes contain additional information
to explain the specific recommendations. Specific recommendations regarding
propagation of endangered Colorado River fishes are:

1. The Program should review the guidelines in this document, revise if
necessary, and adopt a policy or procedures for stocking captive-
reared endangered fishes in the Upper Colorado River Basin.
(Page 30)
2. Finalize and adopt the "Genetic Management Plan" that is based on the
information Section V of this plan. (Page 31)
3. Establish and enforce a Program policy for requesting captive-reared
endangered fish and reporting the species, stocks, and numbers of
fish in captivity on a quarterly basis through a central Program
office. (Page 37)
4. Revisit endangered fish and hatchery facility needs annually to
direct Program propagation efforts because new information on stock
identification and characterization, status and trends, genetics,
ecological requirements, fish passage, fish response to habitat
enhancement, etc. will probably influence Program needs.
