This grant, a partnership between a conserva-
tion organization, federal agency staff, and the people of the
Acomita Pueblo, involved reestablishing the native tree and
shrub species around Acomita Lake and the surrounding area,
both to stabilize this erosion-damaged area and to provide
cover and food for native wildlife species. The project includ-
ed planting 5,000 cottonwood and willow saplings, in addi-
tion to a variety of other indigenous tree, shrub, wildflower,
and grass species. With technical assistance from partners,
residents created a windbreak to
maintain the new plantings
and protect water quality, .
and were trained in the
long-term mainte-
nance of the area.
Restoration classes
involved students
and adults and were
based in the Acomita
Pueblo schools
through an environmen-
tal education curriculum.
The project was celebrated in
October 1997 by visiting members of the
National Wildlife Refuge Association as a
model of agency and tribal cooperation.

Cataract Lake Wildlife Education
USDA Forest Service, CO
Provide interpretation services to the
public at Cataract Lake, White River
National Forest in Colorado, which focus
on wildlife, wilderness, and riparian
issues.
