Bernard, Valley City NFH, personal communication). Costs for this feed were over $40.00
per pound. Due to the high cost of that diet, a talapia diet made by Integral Fish Foods, in Grand
Junction CO was also tried. The conversion rates were lower, but at less than $0.40 per pound the
feed was more economical. For conversion rates (weight offeed per 30 days / fish weight gain per
30 days) see Table 4. The fish were initially fed Barrows razorback diet, but were switched to the
talapia diet when they reached 65 mm in length.

When the razorbacks reached a length of 100 rom, approximately six months after hatching, they
were PIT (passive integrated transponder) tagged. In April 1997, 1,111 razor backs were stocked
into refugia ponds at Horsethiefas future broodstock. Between October 1996 and June 1997, a
total of 9,798 razorbacks were stocked at Clymers grow-out pond. They were harvested from the
pond in September, 1997. In September and October of 1997,3,441 razorbacks were stocked in

-14-
