Project
features include Steinaker Reservoir, offstream from Ashley Creek
with a capacity of 38,200 acre-feet; Fort Thornburgh Diversion Dam;
Steinaker Feeder Canal; and Steinaker Service Canal. Construction
started in 1959 and was completed by 1962, The Vernal Unit, through
storage of waters diverted from Ashley Creek, assures farmers an
adequate, year-round supply of water; augments municipal water
supply for three communities in Ashley Valley - Vernal, Maeser, and
Naples - and provides recreation and fishing at Steinaker Reservoir.
Operation and maintenance responsibility was transferred to the
Uintah Water Conservancy District on January 1, 1967.

Correction of minor deficiencies in constructed works will be ac-
complished as rapidly as funds will permit, and additional drainage
work will be performed as the need for it becomes apparent.

Construction Activities

II. Bonneville Unit

In the spring of 1966 a headquarters was established at Du-
chesne, Utah, for supervision of construction of Bonneville Unit. A
temporary construction campsite was selected adjacent to the com-
munity, and during the summer and fall streets, utilities, house trail-
ers, and mobile housing units were installed,

Early in 1967 bids were taken for constructing Starvation Dam,
Knight Diversion Dam, and the Starvation Feeder Canal- the three
major items comprising the Starvation Water Storage Complex.
Knight Diversion Dam and Starvation Feeder Canal were completed
during 1968, Starvation Dam was completed August 25, 1969. Water
storage in Starvation Reservoir is scheduled to begin during Novem-
ber 1969. U. S. Highway No. 40 has been relocated at Starvation
Reservoir under a Utah State Highway administered contract. A 4-
inch bituminous road surface was completed during September 1969,
Installation of guardrail and painting of road markings are underway.
It is expected that traffic will be routed over the road early in Octo-
ber. Application of a % -inch plant-mix bituminous seal coat to the
roadway will be deferred until the summer of 1970.

New work undertaken for Starvation Dam and Reservoir during
1969 included reservoir clearing and relocation of Strawberry River
road, Both contractors have made excellent progress and expect to
complete all work during 1969.
