I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

Objective 3: Describe influence of BaR's operation of Lake Powell on nursery ,
habitat of Colorado sguawfish.

1. Relatively low densities of larvae and YOY Colorado sguawfish and humpback
chub are typically seen in the inflow of the Colorado River into Lake
powe 11 .

2. The few endangered fish seen in this region utilize backwater habitats that
develop at medium lake levels in mid summer, but are greatly diminished at
high lake levels during spring runoff and at low levels during the late
summe r .

3. The density and diversity of predators and competitors in the lake inflow
may impose a mortality on young endangered fishes in the area; the effect of
potential predators and competitors on endangered fishes has not been
assessed.

4. Few juvenile or adult endangered fishes are found in the inflow and in the
main lake; their rareity in the area may be attributed to competition/preda-
tion or to emigration.

26
