Colorado Water Conservation Board
Tamarisk and Russian Olive Control Cost Sharing Grant Program
Application Form

.

Application Part I.
Provide a one page description of the proposed project in sufficient detail to serve as the Scope
of Work for a grant contract if your project is selected for funding. Describe all essential project
activities and accomplishments, with particular focus on demonstrated benefits to be achieved.
Refer to the attached statement of the existing ecological condition.

A concentrated effort will be placed on the Cache La Poudre River to eradicate tamarisk and
Russian olive. This project ties onto the project proposal under submission from Larimer County
as well as a continuation of the project that was funded by the Pulling Together Initiative in 2006
to address the tamarisk only in the Cache La Poudre River watershed.

Currently there are approximately 100 different landowners comprising 138 parcels directly
along the Cache La Poudre River that will be impacted by this grant. After the main river corridor
is addressed, treatment will extend to land outside of the flood zone that are still within the
watershed and impacting the Cache La Poudre River.

The project will include mapping, photo points before and after, cut-stump treatments utilizing
the Weld County Youth Conservation Corp, monitoring of water quality and quantity along with
vegetation cover and an educational program. The education component will consist of a
billboard campaign, a newspaper article in the Tribune editions in Greeley and Windsor,
Channel 14 TV program, radio announcements on KFKA 1310 and KUNC 91.5 and letters to
the individual landowners announcing the program. The West Greeley Conservation District
and the Poudre Learning Center will also include information in their newsletters through out the
length of the project. The Poudre Learning Center will help provide school programs for .
mapping and water monitoring at and around their facility which is located at approximately a
third of the way along the river or at WCR 27 and WCR 62.25. The Poudre River Trail staff will
set up a water monitoring and mapping program at the Island Grove Regional Park. This
opportunity will utilize local Boy Scouts to track this data on a quarterly rate through out the
project. Island Grove Regional Park is approximately two-thirds of the way along the river. At the
confluence of the Cache La Poudre River and the South Platte River are parcels owned by
Weld County Government and the Colorado Game and Fish Department. Utilizing these two
parcels staff from the Weld County Weed Division and Youth from the Weld County Youth
Conservation Corp will provide the water monitoring on the last section of the river. Vegetation
monitoring will be conducted throughout the project area by Weld County Weed Division and
West Greeley Conservation District staff on a regular basis when working with landowners.

The benefits achieved in this project include eradication of tamarisk and Russian olive within the
Cache La Poudre River watershed which contributes to the larger South Platte River
Watershed. We will also see an improved riparian habitat with enhanced wildlife access and
recreational access at several points along the Cache La Poudre River. Depending on the
proximity of the trees to the Cache La Poudre River edge there should be improved water
quality and quantity, as well. In this project youth will be utilized. As a result they will have a
greater understanding of the environment and how our choices impact the land and future
generations. The youth will be exposed to possible career opportunities that they might not have
thought about without this opportunity to do the mapping, water testing and actual tree removal.

.

2
