EXPERIENCE (continued)
Geomorphic assessment, natural channel restoration design, and construction of Spring Brook at
Springbrook Prarie Forest Preserve: Du Page County, Illinois. 2000 - present
Performed detailed geomorphic and hydrologic assessments on over 3.5 miles of river involving robotic
total station (Trimble S6) and GPS RTK (Trimble R8) surveys of longitudinal profiles, channel cross
sections and floodplain topography, particle size distribution analyses of bed, bank, and bar material,
bank erosion surveys (using bank pins), bed scour (using scour chains), stream discharge, temperature,
and flow duration and flood frequency analysis of USGS streamflow data. Our design integrated the
principles of fluvial geomorphology, hydrology, and aquatic ecology to elevate the bed and reconnect
the channel to its floodplain with a pattern, profile and dimensions commensurate with its current
surroundings. Once a silt-laden, entrenched 2 mile long ditch lined with weedy, undesirable trees, this
reach of Spring Brook is now a 2.5 mile long gravel bed, meandering river with stable bed and banks
planted back to native tall grass prairie which transitions into an oak/maple/black walnut ecotype at the
lower end of the restoration. The removal of trees in the upper reach increases the habitat of the state
threatened Henslow's Sparrow while the conversion from a silt bed to gravel favors the 5 species of
extant mussels, as well as other invertebrate and vertebrate aquatic species currently present in the
system. Construction on Spring Brook proper was completed in the Spring of 2008 but the Forest
Preserve requested an additional design for 1200 feet of channel (a small tributary to Spring erook) and
construction is slated for the Fall of 2008. Provided guidance on post-construction geomorphic
monitoring protocol, located monitoring cross sections, and provided customized templates and macros
(MS Excel format) to reduce and analyze cross section, profile, and particle size distribution data.
Primary Contractor: Blue Mountain Consultants responsible for designing and conducting field surveys,
data reduction and analysis, channel restoration design, and construction oversight.
Sub Contractor: B1ack Creek Hydrology, LLC assisted BMC with all phases of the project.
Sub Contractor: Western Hydrology assisted with assessment and design, only.
Contact:
Leslie Berns
Manager of Natural Resources
Forest Preserve District of DuPage County
PO Box 5000
Wheaton, IL 60187
(630) 933-7671 Ph
PRRIP - Geomorphic Monitoring 10 of 20 Blue Mountain Consultants
