flowing down to the base of the slopes and possibly into the creek, but this could occur as a result of a very
wet spring runoff season or a thunderstorm/prolonged rain event during the summer months. Therefore, we
do not believe that failure of the debris slopes is imminent at this time; but could be imminent in the event
of a wet spring. If short-term protection of the creek is a concern, then we recommend mitigation measures
be enacted as soon as possible, since regrading work may be difficult or impossible during the wetter spring
months.
Based on the site conditions and the concerns of the property owner, we believe that the most feasible
alternative for stabilizing the debris flows is to remove the materials from the slopes. It appears that the
most feasible alternative for removing the material would be to push the material downslope to a staging
area located at the base of the steep slope. The material could then be loaded into trucks and transported to
a waste azea.
Reclamation of the debris flow slopes/disturbed areas and the waste materials azea should then include
shaping and grading to provide uniform surfaces and establish drainage and revegetation efforts. Placement
of erosion control matting on the steep reclaimed debris flow slopes is recommended to help limit erosion
and promote rapid revegetation. For the reclaimed and seeded debris flow azeas we recommend placement
of a wood fiber mat such as the Excelsior Curlex III mat. This mat should provide protection for between
18 and 24 months, which should be adequate to reestablish vegetative cover. In addition, we recommend
the placement of either a manufactured silt fence material or a straw-bale silt fence below the reclaimed
areas to provide siltation protection to the creek from runoff from the newly regraded slopes.
If you have any questions concerning this report or our recommendations, or if we may be of any further
service, please contact this office.
Sincerely,
NORTHWEST COLORADO CONSULTANTS, INC.,
Harold N.
