the incr~~.sed flooding caused by urbanization. Many cities around the country use similar areas in <br />dual use of pazk and stormwater detention. <br />S ite 11 is a continuation of the eroding channel, as located in Figure 3 a. Figures 19 and 20 <br />~ show th;it the channel is smaller, but is continuing to erode. Severe channel erosion generally is <br />arrested at the intersection of Chester anci Willow Streets. <br />S ite 12 is a tributary to Fountain Creek as located in Figure 3 a. The upstream extent is the <br />I~ighw~y culvert crossing from the IvicDanald's restaurant and the downstream extent is near the <br />~ fDOWI1SLffE:am extent of the trailer park. As shown in Figures 21 and 22, the channel is eroding <br />severely and the next downstream highway culvert is rsiore than 6 feet above the existing stream <br />bed. As t:he channel moves away frotn the highway, the channel is severely eroding property, with <br />utility line:s exposed in the streair~, Figure 23. As the channel approaches Fountain Creek, extreme <br />; erosion i:~ occurring as a new channel route is developed. <br />~ <br />4.0 COPICLUSIONS <br />~ The Phase I report provides stron~; evidence of the importance in approaching the situation <br />5 <br />; <br />_~ on a watE;rshed basis. A simple and useful relationship was developed by Lane (1955), which is: <br />~ <br />- QS"'QsDw <br />where ~ is the channel discharge of water, and QS is the sediment dischazge. D~ is the median size <br />of the bed material. S is the hydraulic gradient. Water discharge and hydraulic slope must balance <br />the size .and quantity of sediment discharge for channel stability.
