2. Perform remedial repairs on the existing flume:
This alternative would consist of lining the existing flume
with a new synthetic liner and repairing the damaged wooden
supports holding up the flume. The synthetic liner prevents
further corrosion of the metal flume channel which is still
salvageable if the corrosion is stopped. This alternative
would solve the eminent failure problem associated with the
current condition of the flume but would not address the
obstruction problem caused by having a flume through a
natural drainage. The cost of this alternative is
approximately $50,000.
3. Replace the existing flume with a siphon:
This alternative would consist of completely replacing the
existing flume with a new 54" concrete siphon under
Cottonwood Draw. This alternative would solve both the
eminent failure problem associated with the current
condition of the flume and the obstruction problem caused by
having a flume through a natural drainage. The cost of this
alternative is approximately $150,000.
The Selected Project
The WVDC plans to construct alternative #3. Features of this
alternative are as follows:
- 54" concrete pipe siphon spanning 250 feet under Cottonwood
Draw.
- Rock bedding for the siphon in the groundwater.
- A drain pipe for empting the siphon.
- A concrete inlet structure with a trash rack.
- A concrete outlet structure.
These features are shown in the preliminary set of plans found in
Appendix C.
Feasibility Study
Weldon Valley Ditch Company
Cottonwood Draw Flume
September 2009
3
