Interim results will be presented to
the Board at the November meeting. The work consists of two parts:
1. Estimating 2050 population
2. Updating the SWSI gallon per capita per day (gpcd) basinwide values across the state
The Colorado State Demographer's Office (SDO) has developed population projections through the year
2035. IWMD's contractor utilized the SDO's and Center for Business and Economic Forecasting model to
estimate population at the county level for the year 2050. These projections were developed on a low,
medium and high basis incorporating varying economic development assumptions. Table 1 shows the
projected increase in population for Colorado's major river basins between 2005 and 2050. These
numbers are subject to revision as the SDO has recently updated its 2035 projections.
Table 1 Population Projections for 2035 and 2050
Basin 2005 2035 2050 Population
Population Population Low Medium High
Arkansas 903,016 1,477,482 1,662,295 1,787,188 1,967,475
Colorado 283,316 601,076 709,266 802,418 916,671
Gunnison 98,628 191,654 222,692 243,235 267,969
North Platte 1,553 1,947 2,123 2,356 2,774
Rio Grande 49,421 67,495 74,321 80,036 88,502
South Platte 3,299,192 5,293,403 5,978,460 6,474,818 7,137,991
Southwest 99,964 187,877 210,675 240,396 269,569
Yampa/White 42,184 77,972 97,405 115,455 138,529
Statewide
Total 4,777,274 7,898,907 8,957,237 9,745,903 10,789,481
Water Supply Protection • Flood Protection • Stream & Lake Protection • Water Supply Planning & Finance
Water Conservation & Drought Planning • Intrastate Water Management & Development
