Background
The Interstate Water Management and Development Section (IWMD) is currently updating the Statewide
Water Supply Initiative (SWSI) Demand Projects from 2030 to 2050. Interim results will be presented to
the Board at the November meeting. The work consists of two parts:
1. Estimating 2050 population
2. Updating the SWSI gallon per capita per day (gpcd) basinwide values across the state
The Colorado State Demographer's Office (SDO) has developed population projections through the year
2035. IWMD's contractor utilized the SDO's and Center for Business and Economic Forecasting model to
estimate population at the county level for the year 2050. These projections were developed on a low,
medium and high basis incorporating varying economic development assumptions. Table 1 shows the
projected increase in population for Colorado's major river basins between 2005 and 2050. These
numbers are subject to revision as the SDO has recently updated its 2035 projections.
