• Nothing IBCC can do to keep from ag land dry up
• State SAYS they support maintenance of ag lands, but don't DO anything about it.
• There's got to be some way to provide domestic water without drying up ag land,
particularly on West Slope---one of the ways is more storage, but cost is prohibitive
and process is too lengthy.
• Need to truly define "agriculture"--- thought is that you need to market something
from the land.
• Need to encourage new younger people to farm and provide financial assistance to
them through SB179 funds. Is there interest in creating a subgroup to work on this?
• Discussion needs to be more concrete on these issues.
• Ag money is not going to stop ag dry-up. There needs to be some incentive to stay
in ag. i.e. rotation of land with $ incentive (e.g. Superditch).
• There are no strategies or actions for non-consumptive in vision and goals. Should
not be omitted.
Mike recapped the discussion and asked if we want to develop our own strategies at each of
the Basin's meetings. Some suggested bringing some experts to present different
solutions/methods such as Peter Nichol (Superditch), look outside State, Dolores River
Dialogue, River Protection Workgroup. There was a concern that state-wide implementation
plans will probably not work in each Basin because the needs of the various basins are so
different. It was suggested that we have the experience and creativity within our own
roundtable to determine potential solutions for our basins. Another suggestion was to have a
technical presentation and then a short work session on the topic. Mike said we would follow
this idea and find either local or regional presenters. This might be good topic for the joint
West Slope round table meeting.
