The Grand Junction YVatershed Protection and Fuel Reduction Program has completed a
prescribed burn as part of the project work identified in their grant proposal. The burn window,
the conditions that are needed to conduct prescribed fires, weren't as good as they had hoped for
but still provided the necessary conditions to conduct a logistically complex prescribed burn.
The next component of the project involves 121 acres of fuels mastication that should be
completed this summer. All of the work is on city land except for 3 acres of U.S. Forest Service
land. Several units are laid out for hand thinning, and the Western Colorado Conservation Corps
has looked at the proj ect to determine if they have the capacity to assist with implementation.
HB 1130 funds were used to conduct a complex prescribed burn as part of the Grand Junction
I~atershed Protection and Fuel Reduction Program.
5
