The District's 2 million acre service area covers five Central Colorado high
mountain counties - all of Chaffee, Fremont, Custer and parts of Saguache and El Paso Counties. Figure 1
depicts the five counties along with the locations where measuring devices will be installed.
The District has a current water demand of 1,566 acre feet with a projected demand by 2,035 of nearly 3,000
acre feet. The District water supply is derived from several native water rights and storage decrees in
addition to transmountain water from annual allocations of the Frying Pan Project. The District also owns or
leases Twin Lakes Reservoir and Canal Company water shares. Five of the District's six reservoirs are in
Chaffee County, with the sixth in Custer.
District water use is comprised of supplies for domestic and commercial augmentation of wells and ponds,
and supplies for irrigation structures. Water demand is also generated for irrigation of farm lands through
the District-owned water rights of the Cameron Ditch and through the State Reservoir Boss Lake storage
right for irrigation use on the South Arkansas River.
Upper Arkansas Water Conservancy District (UAWCD) Page 2 of 52
