• A June tour of the lower South Platte Basin focusing on water supply, wildlife and
agricultural issues.
The CFWE's administration underwent significant changes with the hiring of a new Executive
Director, Nicole Seltzer, in December and the departure of our long-time office manager,
Jeannine Tompkins, in May. Changes at the Board of Trustees level occurred also, with the
departure of Ken Lykens, Diane Hoppe, John Redifer, Steve Aquafresca and Rod Kuharich and
the addition of Alex Davis, Jennifer Gimbel, Callie Hendrickson and Steve Vandiver.
The CFWE's finances, going into FY2009, are in the black, thanks to support from the Colorado
Water Conservation Board, major sponsors and our membership. Our FY 2008 Annual Report,
due out in August, will provide more detail.
PREVIEW OF FY 2009
FY 2009 promises to be an exciting one for the CFWE. The FY 2009 Scope of Work for CWCB
funds is attached to this memo. You will see in the scope several changes from previous years,
including the removal of the Citizen's Guide and one edition of Headwaters magazine. These
programs will be funded separately, and will free up funds to support strategic planning,
membership development and implementation of recommendations from the Colorado Water
Education Task Force.
The CFWE has embarked on a strategic planning initiative that will culminate in a January 2009
report that will outline proposed new programs and educational opportunities. Part of the
strategic plan will be to hold conversations with our members and constituents throughout the
summer to better understand their needs and how the CFWE can improve upon the opportunities
for learning it already provides.
Also in FY2009, the CFWE plans to become more involved with the Public Education,
Participation and Outreach workgroup of the Interbasin Compact Committee and will focus some
resources on educating state legislators on water basics.
UPCOMING EVENTS
The following are Foundation events occurring over the summer:
• May 23:2008-09 Water Leaders program applications due
• June 18: CFWE Board meeting
• June 19-20: South Platte Basin tour
• June 30: Public Lands Headwaters and Guide to Colorado Climate Change available
• July 25: Friends of Water Education Golf Classic at Red Hawk Ridge
2
