C~L(~R1~DQ AG W~,TER ,hLLIAN~E
April 9, 2008
Rick Brown
Colorado hater Conservation Board
1313 Sherman St.
IJenver, CO 80203
Dear Mr. Brown:
The signatories to tlus letter wish to convey support for municipal watea• development
projects that minimize the need to pertnancntly remove irrigation water from agricultural
use. Further, they support the general proposal and Letter of Intent submitted by Mr. Don
Ament to the CWCB on March 31, 2008 for grant funding consideration.
Tl~e Colorado Ag Water Alliance is an infotn~al group of agricultural organizations and
individual farmers and ranchers working together to create awareness of the importance
of irrigated agriculture in Colorado. Tl~e Alliance also seeks to educate landowners
regarding Colorado's water rights system and their rights and obligations thereunder.
The Colorado Ag Water Alliance supports a grant proposal that would develop a template
for constructing lease arrangements among irrigation entities and communities in need of
obtaining access to water to assure adequate supplies during drought or to otherwise
prepare for future needs. Therefore, we support the scope and intent of the project
proposal submitted by I1~1i•. Ament, and encourage your consideration to reserve
appropriate grant funding for the project.
We believe that municipalities that choose to explore alternatives to the traditional "buy
and dry" of irrigated agricultural lands do a greater service to their water customers by
not only providing dependable water supplies but also working to maintain the
agricultural heritage and economic diversity that make Colorado unique.
To date, the fallowing members of the Colorado Ag Water Alliance offer their
enthusiastic support:
Colorado Cattleman's Association
Colorado Corn Growers Association
Colorado Farm Bureau
Colorado State University
Rocky Mountain Farmers Union
Mark Sponslea-
Executive Facilitator
Colorado Ag Water Alliance
