Task 49.2 Site Evaluation
• Evaluation criteria will be developed to assess potential recharge locations. The criteria will
have quantitative performance measures assigned, to the extent possible, so that each site can
be evaluated and ranked in an objective and systematic manner. The criteria will be
developed with input from local experts and interested parties. A preliminary list of
evaluation criteria includes:
o Physical considerations, including
^ hydrogeology
^ available storage capacity
^ infiltration rates
^ groundwater travel time to surface streams
o Environmental considerations, including
^ water quality
^ critical habitat
^ wetlands
o .Economic considerations, including:
^ land ownership and site access
^ existing infrastructure
^ proximity to areas of water supply and demand
^ implementation costs
It should be noted that the availability of specific sources of water will not be investigated as
part of this study, but if this type of information becomes available during the course of this
study it will be presented.
• It is anticipated that potential recharge locations will be evaluated and screened in a two-stage
process. For the first stage, selected criteria, such as physical suitability and availability of
existing infrastructure, will be used to eliminate potential sites that do not meet these
minimum criteria. The remaining locations will then be evaluated using the full set of criteria.
Each potential recharge location will be scored and ranked according to the performance
measures that are developed for each criterion according to its overall suitability for
underground storage.
• The results of the site evaluation and screening will be included in the report as described in
Task 49.3. In addition, this information will be reviewed with the CWCB project manager,
and experts he deems appropriate, as it is developed.
SPDSS_Phase4_gvv_SOW_09-I 5-06.doc 20
