•
complement updates to the SPDSS at the end of Phase 3, i.e. historic irrigation mapping. Other
visualization products will include maps and graphs that summarize SPDSS data, such as irrigated
acreage. These summary products will assist in recognizing and quantifying the differences in irrigated
acreage by: groundwater vs. surface water, sprinkler vs. flood, and crop type. The summaries will be
divided by geographic area of interest, such as county or water district. Data from other SPDSS
contractors will also be incorporated to demonstrate that the SPDSS is a comprehensive DSS. Additional
visualization products will be generated at the State's request.
All products generated under this task will be discussed with the State in early draft format. The State
will provide feedback on all drafts to ensure a desirable product.
Approach:
98.3 Develop ArcGIS Explorer application. ArcGIS Explorer offers substantial improvements over
ArcReader for SPDSS data visualization, providing a free, fast, and easy-to-use way to obtain a common
operating picture-in both 2D and 3D-while performing more useful queries and analysis than possible
with ArcReader. A focused application will be developed to extend the capabilities of the ArcGIS
Explorer application by implementing basic SPDSS tasks. The application will be customized so that
CWCB and DWR staff may save maps and other visualizations, task results for later use, and email maps
and visualizations to share with others involved in a task or discussion. The application will include new
and updated SPDSS information, including historic irrigated acreage data layers integrated for
visualization and basic query. This application will also provide the state with the ability to generate new
graphics and fly-throughs for incorporation into subsequent presentations.
98.4 Develop visualization products on historic irrigated acreage mapping. In Phase 3 a number of
visualization products were produced that displayed the products and methodology of the 2001 irrigated
acreage mapping. Historic irrigated acreage mapping was completed in Phase 3. This task will create
similar products that demonstrate the methodology used in the historic mapping as well as the data and
change in acreage over time. Products will include posters displaying the methodology as well as fly
through videos and PowerPoint slides that demonstrate the data and change in irrigated acreage.
98.5 Develop map summaries of SPDSS data. A number of poster style maps will be produced that
display irrigated acreage and other SPDSS data that can be easily interpreted by SPDSS users and the
general public. The maps will be divided by water district and county. Possible summaries include
irrigated acreage (2001 and historic) by: ground water vs. surface water, flood vs. sprinkler, and crop
type. Other possible maps will display amount of water diverted by district and county, total length of
ditches and canals by district and county, distribution of consumptive use, and acreage irrigated by the
different aquifers. The State will communicate with the contractor which specific products will be
produced. Additional products may also be requested by the State.
98.6 Develop additional products as needed. The contractor recognizes that visualization products are
not easily defined or agreed upon. The State will consult with the contractor on additional visualization
ideas and requests. The contractor will assist the State in developing these ideas and create any products
that are requested.
Deliverables:
98.3 ArcGIS Explorer application utilizing new capabilities of this tool and including land use change
data layers integrated for visualization and query.
98.4 Posters, videos, and PowerPoint slides demonstrating methodology and products produced during
the historic irrigation mapping. Posters will be delivered in digital form as well as hardcopy
98.5 Poster sized maps displaying summaries of SPDSS data. Posters will be delivered in digital form as
well as hardcopy. Supporting data and map documents will also be delivered.
98.6 Additional visualization products will be delivered as requested by the State.
