~;J
Tak
C. Specific Task Descriptions
Task 89 -Mapping of Current Land Use and Irrigated Field Boundaries
Objective:
Mapping of irrigated parcels and their crop types and performing accuracy assessment of irrigated lands
and crop type mapping for Water Districts 4-9, 23, 47, 48, 76, and 80. Conduct peer review of ET
estimates from native vegetation.
Background:
Current land use, including irrigation and crop type, was finalized for Districts 64, 1, 2, and 3 under
Phase 1&2. Irrigation and crop type mapping and accuracy assessment for Districts 4-9, 23, 47, 48, 76,
and 80 will be completed in this Task. Other related subtasks include mapping of water bodies and peer
review of the native vegetation ET estimates.
Approach:
89.7 Review, Revision, and Final Classification. 'The Contractor will be responsible for review,
revision, and final classification of results for irrigation status and crop types. Instrumental in this
process will be input from water users, division engineers, conservancy district engineers,. and
technicians. These personnel will be provided with draft products for use in reviewing the field
boundaries, current land use and crop types. Interaction with these personnel for this review will be
conducted at the same time as the consultation on :irrigation service areas, as described in Task 91,
for Districts 4-9, 23, 47, 48, 76, and 80. Based on this review, the Contractor will edit the draft field
boundaries and classifications and prepare the final products for Districts 4-9, 23, 47, 48, 76, and 80.
89.8 Conduct Accuracy Assessment. The Contractor will assess the accuracy of the classification of
irrigation status and crop type for Districts 4-9, 23, 47, 48, 76, and 80. The primary source of data
will be the Farm Service Area field-checked data for• the year 2001.
89.9 Peer Review ET Estimates from Remote Sensing. Remote sensing has the potential for
estimating ET on a regional scale with a minimal amount of collected ground data. Through remote
sensing, it is possible to estimate an instantaneous ET on a pixel basis (e.g., 30-meter pixels for
Landsat TM) using the surface energy balance equatiom or by relating reference ET to satellite image
parameters. The Consumptive Use (CU) Contractor will make estimates of ET from native vegetation
using relationships established from ground measurements of ET and parameters derived from
2
compression software -have proven to be critical and also will be used under Phase 3. Other special
software is not anticipated for Phase 3, but if the need arises will be brought to the attention of the
State.
