i r ~ ~~~~
M 2
The assignment of soil water holding capacities to a structure is required as part of a supply-
limited consumptive use in StateCU and for simulating soil moisture use in StateMod. A new
GIS-based DMI is being developed in this Scope under Task 18 that will automate the
assignment of soil moisture holding capacity to a key or aggregated structure.
Objective:
Document the estimate of soil water holding capacities for key model structures, aggregate
structures, and ground water only structures in the South Platte and North Platte River Basins.
Approach:
57.1 Document the use of the new GIS-based DMI, developed in Task 18, to perform an
intersection of GIS irrigated acreage coverages (2001 and historic coverages) with the
statewide soil moisture coverage developed under previous CDSS efforts to determine the
average soil moisture characteristics for key and aggregated structures (includes ground
water only aggregates). The digital results will be provided to the State's HydroBase data
manager.
57.2 The structure file (*.str) used to define non-time series information for each key and
aggregate structure modeled in the historic consumptive use model contains information
regarding structure location, climate station assignments (determined in Phase 1), and
available water capacity. Using StateDMI, create the structure file required for the
StateCU historic consumptive use analysis.
Deliverables:
57.1 A technical memorandum that describes the results and provides astep-by-step procedure
for assigning available water holding capacity to key and aggregate structures using the
new GIS-based DMI. The memorandum will include maps showing soil polygons and
associated available water capacity and statistics by water district, drainage area, and total
study area. This technical memorandum is expected to an appendix in the final Historic
Crop Consumptive Use Report. The command file used in the GIS-based DMI will be
provided to the State.
57.2 The StateDMI command file required to create the structure file (*.str) and the final
structure file required for StateCU.
- - - _ Ta~l~ 64 - Deyel4g I'~'~~i.Ri~~~ U~~stim~~ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Background:
The quantity of precipitation that recharges an aquifer should be consistent with other uses of
precipitation (e.g. the amount consumed by irrigated and native vegetation, losses, held in
storage, and runoff).
Objective:
Review the published information for the basin and western United States on precipitation
recharge to groundwater aquifers. Develop precipitation recharge, estimates for the SPDSS study
area that are consistent with estimates of precipitation used to meets crop and native vegetation,
Exhibit A-1Page 14
