South Platte River Basin
The entire year was again focused on the collection
of data; however, that was completed and the
modeling of the alluvial groundwater system has
been initiated. The analysis of the data is available
for viewing and downloading at the CDSS website.
CDM, the groundwater contractor, is in the final
phase of designing and implementing a data
centered modeling approach. The idea of a data
centered approach will make the updating and
implementation of a groundwater model, in any
basin, more efficient and maintainable by the State
in the future.
The following charts the estimated historical
irrigated acres determined from satellite imagery
and aerial photography, for the South Platte River
Basin only. Detailed technical memoranda can be
found at the CDSS website under "Product/GIS".
This is the first time that detailed irrigated land
delineation has been done for the entire basin for
different years.

2007 Goals
It has been seven years since the last irrigated
refresh for the western slope was performed. In
2005, ground truthing of certain irrigated parcels
was performed to obtain the actual crop type
irrigated. This will be used to assign correct crop
types to other irrigated parcels, using Landsat
imagery. The same techniques used in the SPDSS
will be implemented with this update; however, this
refresh will be done in-house. Our goal this year is
to complete the 2005 refresh for the western slope,
as well as for the Rio Grande.
Groundwater modeling will be continued in 2007
for the South Platte alluvium. The Denver Basin
bedrock modeling was completed in late 2006, in
cooperation with the USGS, with the USGS being
the lead agency. The South Platte alluvial model is
being developed by our groundwater contractor,
CDM, and will encompass the alluvial systems of
the mainstem of the South Platte and the alluvial
aquifers overlying the Denver Basin. In early 2007,
a preliminary model will be completed, that
contains the model framework but without
some of the inputs still to be determined by
other contractors. Once those additional
inputs are available, they will be
implemented, and the model will be
completed in early 2008.
Peer Review Committee meetings will be
held for the groundwater, consumptive use
and spatial components in early 2007. The
purpose of these meetings is to provide a
technical forum so that the water
community can provide review, comments,
and7~suggestions on the technical aspects of
SPDSS.
The CDSS team will also continue to
support the SWSI and HB-1177 efforts, as
well as other interagency activities where
CDSS can be of assistance.
