endangered species recovery program.
The updating of the Colorado River surface water planning model got off to a slow start, due to the internal
contracting process; however it is now moving forward with the anticipated completion in early 2006.
With the completion of the Colorado River Basin model, all river basins in the western slope, including the
Rio Grande, will have surface water planning models in both a monthly and daily timestep for the 1975-
2004 period.
South Platte River Basin
The entire year was again focused on the collection of data; however, on the groundwater side, analysis of
the data was completed and is available for viewing and downloading at the CDSS website. CDM, the
groundwater contractor, is in the final phase of designing a data centered modeling approach. The idea of a
data centered approach will make the updating and implementation of a groundwater model, in any basin,
more efficient and maintainable by the State in the future.
2006 Goals
It is has been five years since the last irrigated refresh for the western slope was done. In 2005, ground
truthing of certain irrigated parcels was performed to obtain the actual crop type irrigated. This will be used
to assign correct crop types to other irrigated parcels, using Landsat imagery. The same techniques used in
the SPDSS will be implemented with this update.
Groundwater modeling will be continued in 2006 for both the Denver Basin bedrock aquifers and the
South Platte alluvium. The Denver Basin bedrock modeling will be done in cooperation with the USGS,
with the USGS being the lead agency. The South Platte alluvial model will be developed by our
groundwater contractor, CDM, and will encompass the alluvial systems of the mainstem of the South
Platte, and the alluvial aquifers overlying the Denver Basin. This will be amulti-year effort.
The ISFDSS will be completed in 2006.
The CDSS team will also continue to support the SWSI effort, as well as other interagency activities where
CDSS can be of assistance.
Visit the CD55 on the web!
http:~~GG!55.5tate.GO.
