Audience Member -There isn't enough done on conserving water. I'm surprised there hasn't been
more done on conservation, considering we were in a 10 year drought. Now conserved
water goes to Lake Powell.
Rita Crumpton - Need to tie land planning to water supply.
John Redifer - Conservation is a means to an end but isn't an end in itself.
Audience Member - Look at wind power, could use demand to pump it into lakes. A lot of things
we need to do to create more water.
John Redifer -Look more toward water augmentation. Think 50-75 years down the road.
Think about desalinization, etc.
Steve Acquafresca - A tool used by other States is Conservation Water Rights. It could provide
incentive to water owners to conserve their water without the fear of losing it.
John Redifer - 80% of water is used by agriculture.
Audience Member -Flooding in Loma, better bridges could be constructed to reduce flooding.
Better regulation of water in irrigation ditches, regulating home lawn watering, using
xeriscape.
Craig Meis -Water storage.
John Redifer -Still have to be concerned with out obligations to our downstream states. How much
water can we move to the front range without us finding ourselves in their situation.
Audience Member -How much water flows into the ocean?
John Redifer -About 6 drops.
Audience Member - If we're using it all, storage doesn't make sense.
John Redifer -It's not that we're using it all, it's is everyone getting their fair share? We have
to find the balance.
Steve Acquafresca - Roundtables spend time evaluating funding, what else do they talk about?
Mel Rettig -We're concerned with consumptive and non-consumptive needs assessment and energy
needs. Try to figure out what the requirements are. We look at how much water is diverted
for agriculture. The Colorado River Basin uses 8 acre feet, which is more than others.
Laws are going to have to change.
Rita Crumpton - to be fair to agriculture -they don't get credit for modernization, micro] et, etc.
Audience Member -When the Bureau of Reclamation designed projects in the valley at 5 acre feet.
And if they put 8 on and are getting 4 acre feet off, they are 50% off.
These are out of the realm of what we envisioned.
Audience Member - it is out of the high country where that number comes from.
