CRDSS
TASK MEMORANDUM 1.15-15
Water Rights Planning Model
Data Management Interface Utility to Estimate Natural
Streamflow at U.S. Geological Survey Gaging Stations
1.0 ISSUE
This task memorandum outlines and describes the procedures of the data management interface (DMI)
utility that will be used to estimate natural streamflow at U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) gaging
stations. Natural flow is defined as the flow that would have historically occurred, absent of any activity
coreflow
by man (diversion and storage of water). This DMI utility will be named . This task
coreflow
memorandum will serve as the design document to guide the development of .
Under the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation's (USBR?s) Colorado River Simulation System (CRSS) program,
monthly natural streamflow has been estimated at a limited number of locations within Colorado River
basins. The locations where the USBR has estimated natural streamflow are called CRSS core stations,
and generally are at key USGS gaging stations. The USBR?s estimates of monthly natural streamflow
are for 1906 to 1984; for a few of the CRSS core stations, the estimates were extended to 1990. For the
CRDSS project, estimates of natural streamflow will be needed at additional USGS gaging stations that
will supplement the CRSS core stations. USGS gaging stations in which natural streamflow will be
coreflow
estimated pursuant to the procedures of will establish the CRDSS core stations. Natural
coreflow
streamflow at the original CRSS core stations can be recalculated using and could be used to
replace the old estimate of natural streamflow computed by the CRSS program (a bac kup of original
CRSS natural streamflow data will always be maintained).
Natural streamflow estimated at CRDSS core stations will be used to determine natural streamflow and
nodeflow
natural inflow at the MODSIM network model nodes using the DMI utility (Task
coreflow
Memorandum 1.15-16). The DMI utility will be run prior to the execution of the DMI utility
nodeflow
.
2.0 DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS
coreflow
The following assumptions are made concerning the development of :
Missing data for reservoir storage contents, diversions, and gaged streamflows have been filled
?
by the database group pursuant to Task 1.08.

Irrigated acreage tributary to the selected USGS gages in each basin will be available from the
?
consumptive use group. The acreage will be based upon the mapping provided by the Division
of Water Resources.

Unit consumptive use that is applicable to the irrigated lands above the USGS gage will be
?
available from the consumptive use group.

1
A275 01.09.95 1.15-15 Hyre, Fosha
