2) WSSC Plains System
The WSSC plains system is located between lands irrigated under the North Poudre Irrigation
Company (NPIC) to the north and the Larimer and Weld Irrigation Company (Larimer and Weld
Company) to the south. Key structures identified in the WSSC Plains System include the
Larimer County Canal and the system of nine reservoirs that make up the WSSC Plains
Reservoir System.
Larimer County Canal (Structure ID 0300911)
When Larimer County Ditch Company began construction of the Larimer County Canal in 1881
it was the region's largest irrigation ditch enterprise. In August 1892, WSSC assumed all
obligations of the Larimer County Ditch Company including Larimer County Canal.
Larimer County Canal is the primary canal for WSSC. The headgate of the Larimer County
Canal is located on the north side of the Cache la Poudre River, approximately two miles
downstream of the mouth of the Poudre Canyon, 50 river miles downstream of the Laramie-
Poudre Tunnel, 55 river miles downstream of Chambers Lake, and 63 river miles downstream of
Long Draw Reservoir. The Larimer County Canal and its laterals convey water from the Cache
la Poudre River approximately one mile south of Ted's Place to U.S. Highway 85 as far down as
between Pierce and Ault in Weld County. Two major laterals extend from the Larimer County
Canal: Pierce Lateral and Collins Lateral. Pierce Lateral extends east from Black Hollow
Reservoir and Collins Lateral extends from the eastern extent of Larimer County Canal east of
Highway 85. The two laterals extending from the canal are carrier ditches not owned by WSSC.
The locations of the Larimer County Canal and associated laterals are shown of Figure 2.
.
~f
l
-. ~.
? .~ ~ .
~
~. ~
4 t1 ~
1 ..
~
p'
~ y .

^ ,.
~_

__
~~
°v~
v ~ .-.~
.w6L.
y~
3 ~tl~4
nv ':.,
~v4 .: ...: Tw. ~
~r
y
_ ., ~-
~--
Water carried in the Larimer
County Canal includes direct flow
water, transmountain diversions,
releases from WSSC mountain
reservoirs, exchanged water, and
C-BT water. The canal has
historically been used to carry
irrigation water to irrigators along
the canal or extending laterals.
The canal travels in a general
eastward direction, meandering
north and south as it makes its
way to its terminus in Water
Bridge on County Road 56 over the Larimer County Canal Dlstrlct 1. As the Canal travels to
the east, it intercepts Dry Creek,
Boxelder Creek, Coalbank Creek, Spring Creek, and Lone Tree Creek. Town Lateral and Mead
Lateral are piped underneath the Larimer County Canal. The eastern extent of lands irrigated
under the WSSC System is Owl Creek.
Water is delivered from the main canal to the farm laterals through manually operated lateral
headgates equipped with Parshall flumes.
WaterSupply&Storage Memo.doc
10 of 21
