Argentine Pass
OPERATIONAL INFORMATION
The City of Golden opens Vidler Tunnel for dive rsion as soon as legally possible, based on the
stipulations of associated water rights. The t ypical diversion season for Vidler Tunnel is June
through August. Once opened, Vidler Tunnel di scharges continuously until snowmelt runoff
ends or the tunnel is closed. Th e peak discharge occurs in late-J une or early-July and the flow
tapers off to zero in September.
Vidler Tunnel does not interact with any other transmountain divers ions. The City of Golden has
operated Vidler Tunnel for only one season. As Golden continues to op erate the tunnel the
operating strategy will be adjusted so as to optim ize the use of the transmountain water. In all
years, the goal will be to fill Eastern Slope re servoirs through the spring runoff period. Golden’s
Eastern Slope reservoirs include Upper Urad, Lower Urad, and Gu anella Reservoirs. Some of
the water transported through the tunnel is deliv ered through contract obligation to downstream
parties. Contract delivery obligations for Vi dler Tunnel water include Clear Creek County, St.
Mary’s Water and Sanitation, Coors, and Clear Creek High School. Vidler Tunnel water used by
Golden is diverted through the Golden City D itch where it may be used for a variety of uses
including but not limited to golf course irrigation and municipal water supply.
Where to find more information
Specifics relating to the data collection and f illing processes used in the determination of
the best source of data are presented in the SPDSS Task 4 Memorandum – Identify and
Fill/Resolve Conflicting R ecords for Key Transmountain Diversion Structures.
Additional information on ditch and reservoi r operations within Water District 7 is
presented in the Water District 7 Meeting Notes prepared for SPDSS Task 3 – Identify
Key Diversion Structures.
COMMENTS AND CONCERNS
None.
VidlerTunnel.doc 8 of 10
