OPERATIONAL INFORMATION
The Riverside Irrigation District and Company j ointly divert, store and deliver water to irrigation
users within the District. The District's approximate boundaries are State Route 71 on the east,
Equus Recharge Area on the west, Riverside Canal on the north, and Jackson Lake Inlet, Weldon
Valley Ditch, Deuel and Snyder Ditch, Tremont Ditch, Snyder Ditch and the South Platte River
form the southern boundary. The District also includes some land above Riverside Canal that
can be served by pumping from the canal. The District boundaries change frequently due to the
process of inclusion or exclusion of District acres. The Company does not have a defined
boundary and shares are used outside of the District boundary to serve recharge areas and
irrigation users on other ditches.
The sequence of water rights calls affecting storage in the System in a typical year is as follows:
• The System typically begins to fill the reservoir under the Company's three senior
storage water rights at the beginning of November, after District irrigation deliveries have
stopped.
• Riverside Reservoir will store throughout the winter until it fills. In early spring, after the
freeze period, additional water will be stored to compensate for seepage losses in order to
keep the reservoir full.
• After the reservoir has filled, the District will divert water for storage in Vancil
Reservoir. If Vancil Reservoir fills prior to the commencement of irrigation deliveries,
diversions will continue to be made for augmentation.
• Users begin to request delivery of irrigation water during the early part of April
depending on the weather. The System's direct flow water rights are typically in priority
for a portion of April, May and June to supply irrigation water. Riverside and Vancil
Reservoir storage releases supplement direct flow diversions.
• Irrigation users will cease requests for irrigation deliveries in mid-September, at which
point the District will typically use its Riverside Reservoir refill water right to make
diversions into storage. Diversions into storage at Vancil Reservoir may also occur at
this time. As in the spring, if Vancil Reservoir is full, diversions can be made for
augmentation.
Where to find more information
^ The Water District 1 Meeting Notes prepared for SPDSS Task 3 -Identify Key Diversion
Structures contain additional information on ditch and reservoir operations within the
water district.
^ The Irrigated Acreage Assessment GIS Coverage prepared for SPDSS displays the
boundary of the Riverside Irrigation District service area.
