PHYSICAL INFORMATION
Moffat Tunnel originates in Water Division 5 District 51 in Grand County and terminates in
Water Division 1 District 6 in Gilpin County.
Construction of Moffat Water Tunnel was completed in 1936. In the summer of 1936 the first
water flowed through a partially lined Tunnel. In 1958 the lining of the Tunnel was completed.
The 10-foot 6-inch diameter circular tunnel was designed to be operated under pressure. The
Tunnel was historically constructed for transporting water to the Eastern Slope for municipal,
domestic, and fire uses.
After Moffat Tunnel was completed the Moffat Water Collection System was expanded. The
present Moffat Water Collection System includes the use of concrete and steel pipes, tunnels,
siphons, and open and closed canals to convey water to the Moffat Water Tunnel for transport to
the East slope.
The Moffat Water Collection system facilities capture water from the following river systems for
use in the Denver Area:
• Williams Fork River,
• Fraser River tributaries,
• South Boulder Creek, and
• Ralston Creek.
The major facilities in the Moffat Water Collection System include the following:
• Williams Fork Collection System,
• August P. Gumlick Tunnel,
• Vasquez Tunnel,
• Fraser River Collection System,
• Cabin-Meadow Creek Collection System,
• Moffat Tunnel,
• Gross Reservoir,
• South Boulder Diversion Canal,
• Ralston Reservoir,
• Long Lakes, and
• Ralston-Clear Creek Canal.
Length: 6.1 miles

R~:>~•
Capacity: 1,360 cfs
Diversion Measurement Device: East Portal
DWR WDID: 5104655
USGS ID: 09022500 -Moffat Water Tunnel at East Portal
Moffat Tunnel East Portal
MoffatTunnel.doc 4 of 10
