through inlet ditches that divert from the Poudre Valley Canal. As the Poudre Valley Canal
travels to its terminus at Cobb Lake, the canal crosses Dry Creek, Boxelder Creek, and Indian
Creek.
Length: Total length of the Poudre Valley Canal is approximately 30 miles.
Capacity: The physical capacity of the Poudre Valley Canal is approximately 350 cfs.
Conveyance Efficiency: Unknown
Irrigated Area: Poudre Valley Canal is only used to fill reservoirs. Poudre Valley Canal does
not directly serve irrigated lands with Larimer Weld Company water. There is a small
amount of land between the mouth of the Poudre Canyon and Ted's Place (Hwy 14 and
Hwy 287) irrigated under the canal, however, these lands are irrigated with Canon Canal
Company water.
Return Flow Locations: Return flows from Poudre Valley Canal accrue to the WSSC System
to the south and to Dry Creek, Boxelder Creek, Indian Creek, and the Cache la Poudre
River.
Measurement Device: Diversions through Poudre Valley Canal are measured through a 32 -
footrectangular weir equipped with a Stevens recorder.
HydroBase Data: Daily diversion data for Poudre Valley Canal is available in HydroBase for
the 1950 to 2002 SPDSS study period. Between 1950 and 2002, average annual
diversions through Poudre Valley Canal were 16,381 acre-feet per year.
Poudre Valley Canal Reservoir System
The Poudre Valley Canal Reservoir System includes the following reservoirs:
Douglas Reservoir (Structure ID 0303725),
Little Windsor Reservoir (aka Windsor Reservoir No. 8) (Structure ID
0303727),
Annex No. 8 (Structure ID 0303728),
Elder Reservoir (Structure ID 0303729), and
• Cobb Lake (Structure ID 0303730).
All reservoirs under the Poudre Valley Canal Reservoir System are fed through the Poudre
Valley Canal. Physical storage under the Poudre Valley Canal Reservoir System is
approximately 45,341 acre feet.
Douglas Reservoir (Structure ID 0303725)
Douglas Reservoir, originally completed in 1901, is filled through the Poudre Valley
Canal. Water stored in Douglas Reservoir is released to the Larimer County Canal which
is owned by WSSC, for the purpose of exchange. Douglas Reservoir has not been
enlarged. In 1990, Douglas Reservoir was emptied for dam safety issues and repair. In
2002, Douglas Reservoir did not fill because the water rights were never in priority.
Larimer&Weld Memo.doc
7 of 20
