The canal shares this he adgate with the Evans No. 2 ditch. T h e original
construction of the Platte Valley Canal included two phases of work: enlargem ent of the Evans
No. 2 Ditch from the headgate to the bifurcati on and construction of the new section of canal
which branched off of the enlarged E v ans No. 2 Ditch. This construction was com p le ted by the
fall of 1911.
Platte Valley Canal water is carried through th e Evans No. 2 Ditch from the headgate in a
northern direction for about 10 m iles at which po int th e ditch bif u rcate s to produce the Platte
Valley Canal and the rem a inder of the Evans No. 2 Ditch. After bifurcating, the Platte Valley
Canal continues in a northeastern direction for approxim a tely 10 m iles, running parallel to
Evan’s Ditch No. 2 at a higher elevation, and feeds Milton L a ke. The canal is unlined.
The Evans No. 2 Ditch conveys direct flow water to its shareholders. Aside from the shared
headgate, the Evans No. 2 system is operated co mpletely independent from the FRICO system .
FRICO is a stockholder of one share out of a to tal 344 shares in the Evans No. 2 Ditch, which
gives them t h e right to a m i nor por tion of the direct flow. Note th at along with direct f l ow rights,
each share in the Evans No. 2 Ditch Com p any also has 30 CBT units, un less th at sh areholder has
sold the CB T units of f .
Length:
The entire canal length from the headgate, in cluding the shared portion of canal with the
Evans No. 2 Ditch, is approxim a tely 26 m iles.
Capacity:
T h e capacity of the canal is approximately 500 cfs th roughout its entire length.
Conveyance Efficiency :
Conveyance losses are estim ated to be around 20%.
Irrigated Acreage and Crop Types :
There are approxim a tely 13,000 irrigated acres under the
FRICO–Milton System , based on the SPDSS irri gated acreag e assessm ent and es tim ates
provided by FRICO. A s m all percentage of these lands can receive water from both the
FRICO–Barr and the FR ICO–Milton system s.
Groundw at er Use:
There is a sign ificant am ount of gr ound water use u nder the FR ICO-Milto n
system .
