Conveyance Efficiency: Reported seepage on the canal averages 35 percent, although no studies
have been performed on the conveyance losses.
Return Flow Locations: Based on the location of irrigated land and surface topography,
approximately 20 percent returns above the Fort Morgan Canal headgate, 35 percent
return above the Dueul and Snyder headgate, and 45 percent returns above the Lower
Platte and Beaver Canal headgate.
HydroBase Data: Available diversions for Bijou Canal average 47,000 acre-feet per year. Bijou
Canal also serves as an alternate point of diversion for the Corona Ranch (0100509) and
Putnam (0100506).
Irrigated Crops: The System has a practice of surveying all of the land users regarding crop
types and sprinkler use. For the year of 2003, crop types included:
Corn 71%
Beans 2%
Hay 15%
Grains 5%
Others (Grass/Potatoes/Onions) 8%
4) Bijou Reservoir 2 (Structure ID 0103570)
Bijou Reservoir 2 is an off-channel reservoir located on the east side of Bijou Canal.
Construction began in 1904 and the reservoir was completed in 1909. Due to construction on
sandy soil, the reservoir does not hold storage water efficiently. Seepage from the reservoir has
been incorporated into an augmentation plan for the Company. Diversions for
storage/augmentation in Bijou Reservoir 2 are delivered by Bijou Canal.
Capacity:
Total Storage:
Area/Capacity Data:
9,183 acre-feet (Decreed capacity)
Unknown
Reservoir Seepage/Evaporation Information: No studies have been conducted to quantify
seepage losses from Bijou Reservoir 2 although large seepage losses are reported.
HydroBase Data: Historical end-of--month contents for Bijou Reservoir 2 are recorded in
Hydrobase for the 1950 to 2003 time period, although the records are not complete.
WATER RIGHTS
The Company has ownership of the water rights shown in Table 2 and the upper portion of
Table 3, with the exception of the water right that is owned by the District. The lower portion of
Table 3 contains direct flow water rights owned by entities other than the District or Company.
The District has ownership of Empire Reservoir, and all storage water rights associated with the
Bijou Irrigation System 9 of 13
