The canal
generally travels in a southeastern direction and parallels the river. The canal crosses Kiowa
Creek and Bijou Creek, both of which are conveyed under the canal. The canal diverts direct
flow water and conveys storage releases from the reservoir for irrigation use on System lands,
and also conveys water to Bijou No. 2 Reservoir for augmentation purposes. Direct flow water
is also diverted at Bijou Canal on behalf of Corona Ranch and the Putnam Ditch Company. The
diversion structure consists of a series of bays, walls, and radial gates for a total length of 426
feet. The diversion structure spans the river.
Length: Approximately 42 miles of canal, with an additiona138 miles of laterals.
Capacity: The capacity of Bijou Canal is 600 cfs.
Measurement Device: Diversion measurements on Bijou Canal are made using a staff gage in a
rated section located near the diversion headgate. A 20' Parshall flume with clock
recorder is located approximately one-half mile downstream of the headgate for
verification and calibration purposes. These devices measure the diversions made for the
System and Putnam Ditch lands. Records of diversions to Putnam Ditch from Bijou
Canal are also recorded under the Putnam Ditch. Diversions to the Corona Ranch are
made upstream of the second measurement device; therefore records from this device do
not include Corona Ranch diversions.
Bijou Irrigation System 8 of 13
