Pipeline. The diversion point into the Silver Lake Pipeline is referred to by the City as "Intake
No.3."
The Silver Lake Pipeline coveys water approximately five miles by gravity to Lakewood
Reservoir, which is located near the confluence of North Boulder Creek and Como Creek. The
capacity of the Silver Lake Pipeline is 19.4 million gallons per day (MGD), or roughly 30 cubic
feet per second (cfs). Water conveyed through the Silver Lake Pipeline passes through the Silver
Lake Hydroelectric Plant prior to entering Lakewood Reservoir. The Silver Lake Hydroelectric
Plant is capable of producing up to 13.6 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.
In addition to deliveries through the Silver Lake Pipeline, water is conveyed to Lakewood
Reservoir by diversion at the North Boulder Creek Inlet (also known as the Lakewood Diversion),
and by diversion at the Como Creek Inlet. Together these diversion points are referred to by the
City as "Intake No2." The diversion structure from North Boulder Creek to Lakewood Reservoir
consists of a concrete dam capable of diverting the entire flow of North Boulder Creek and a
pipeline leading to the Lakewood Reservoir, with a capacity of 30 cfs. The structure diverting
from Como Creek to Lakewood Reservoir is similar to the diversion from North Boulder Creek.
Diversions through Intake No. 2 are measured using Parshall flumes at the diversion structures.
Flows from two small tributaries, Delonde Creek and Caribou Creek enter North Boulder Creek
above the North Boulder Creek Inlet to Lakewood Reservoir, i.e., flows from these creeks serve to
increase the divertible supply from North Boulder Creek into the Reservoir. The combined
drainage area of North Boulder Creek above Lakewood Reservoir is approximately 31 square
miles. Natural drainage above Lakewood has been estimated to be 21,800 acre-feet per year
(WBLA, 1988).
The capacity of Lakewood Reservoir is approximately 300 acre-feet and the reservoir is used by
the City to regulate flows into the Lakewood Pipeline (Structure ID 0600601).
City of Boulder Memo.Doc Page 6 of 30 March 9, 2005
Lakewood Reservoir
