SECTIONONE
Introduction
~ 1.1 STUDY PURPOSE
~ The purpose of the Knouth Reservoir Project is to enhance the means for SIDC to continue
providing irrigation water to shareholders by adding another storage option to their present
~ system. The purpose of this study was to update the 2003 Study. The study goals included the
following:
1. Identify the cause of two seepage areas, one along the maYimum section at the north
embat~nent and one at the south embankment;
2. Prepare mitigation alternatives that would reduce the seepage and allow permanent water
storage in the reservoir; and
3. Prepare alternatives tHat would address other SEO dam safety concerns related to the
spiilway capacity, structural conditions of the north and south outlets, and vegetation
growth along the upstream and downstream dam faces.
1.2 SCOPE OF WORK
This study was divided into four tasks which included 1) Task 1- Drilling Program, 2) Task 2-
Laboratory Program, 3) Task 3- Outlet Inspection, and 4) Task 4- 2003 CWCB Feasibility
Study Update.
Task 1- Drilling Program
The goals of the drilling program was to collect field samples for laboratory testing, identify
seepage causes, and verify findings and recommendations in the 2003 Study related to
geotechnical related issues.
T'he dritling program consisted of seven borings; five borings along the north embankment and
two borings along the south embankment. Four borings of the five borings along the north
embankment were located along the dam crest with the fifth boring located at the downstream
toe of the dam. Two borings along the south embankment were located along the dam crest.
~ '(~,,5 1-1
