3) Spinney Mtn Reservoir (Structure ID 2302903)
Aurora's principal raw water storage in the South Platte
River Basin is Spinney Mtn Reservoir, located on the
Middle Fork of the South Platte River, upstream of
Denver's Eleven Mile Reservoir. Construction of this
reservoir was completed in 1981. The reservoir is fully
owned by Aurora (in 2003, 4,000 ac-ft of the reservoir,
previously transferred to the City of Thornton, was re-
acquired by Aurora).
Water sources available for storage in Spinney Mtn Reservoir include the native flow right of
Spinney Mtn Reservoir, Upper South Platte changed water rights, Tarryall Basin changed water
rights (by exchange), and imports into the South Platte Basin of Colorado River and Arkansas
River water sources (through the Otero Pumping Plant and Homestake Pipeline).
Specifics regarding Spinney Mtn Reservoir include the following:
• The drainage basin area upstream of Spinney Mtn Reservoir is approximately 772 sq. miles.
• Total capacity of 53,651 ac-ft.
• Dead storage of 5,000 ac-ft.
• Total active capacity of 48,651 ac-ft.
• Maximum surface area of approximately 2,500 acres.
• Present outlet capacity of 1,750 cubic feet per second (cfs) at an elevation of the minimum
pool (8,649 ft.).
• Present service spillway capacity of 37,000 cfs.
• The Auxiliary (emergency spillway) capacity is an additional 67,100 cfs (104,100 cfs total).
An elevation-capacity curve for Spinney Mtn Reservoir (a subset of the data points on the curve
is included in Table 1) was provided by the City of Aurora.
Table 1
Spinney Mtn Reservoir
Stage -Area -Capacity Curve
Elev.
