SPDSS Task 4 Memorandum
November 23, 2004
Results -Data Review and Resolution of Conflicting Records
For several gages, discrepancies were found between data presented in USGS Water
Supply Papers or provided by project owners or water users, and data in HydroBase. In
many cases, winter diversions were stored in HydroBase as "missing values", but were
published by others as "0" diversions. In other cases, a single day, month, or several
years were missing from HydroBase, but had been recorded and published by others.
The discrepancies, many early in the SPDSS study period of 1950 through the current
year, were identified, documented, and presented to the State hydrographers for review.
The data was reviewed and, where acceptable, formatted for inclusion in HydroBase.
This resulted in most transbasin diversions now having complete records in HydroBase
for the SPDSS study period. The following transbasin diversion records were enhanced
in HydroBase through these efforts:
^ Alva B. Adams Tunnel,
^ Homestake Pipeline,
^ Boreas Pass Ditch,
^ Eureka Ditch,
^ Grand River Ditch,
^ Moffat Water Tunnel,
^ Roberts Tunnel,
^ Straight Creek Tunnel,
^ Cameron Pass Ditch,
^ Michigan Ditch,
^ Bob Creek Ditch,
^ Laramie Poudre Tunnel,
^ Skyline Ditch,
^ Wilson Supply Canal, and
^ Columbine Ditch.
Results -Selection of Best Available Data Source
In most cases, the continuously monitored streamflow station data was the best available
data source. In general, the continuously monitored streamflow station data repeatedly
exhibited the following characteristics:
• Exhibited the longest period of record,
• Exhibited the most complete set of data throughout the period of study,
• Has available corresponding monthly and daily diversion data, and
• Continues to be operated as a recording device.
In some instances, the best source of data throughout the study period varied. For those
instances, StateMod format files were developed that provide a complete record of
diversion data throughout the SPDSS study period. Appendix A provides a summary of
the data sources compared for each transmountain diversion structure and identifies the
selected best available source of data on an annual basis. Note that these tables reflect
updated HydroBase records as described above. The remainder of the results section
Page 8 of 19
