In addition rules have been implemented (Rule Type 9) to make releases from
reservoirs (if necessary) to meet historical end of month reservoir contents (Table 12,
Attachment 2). The rule types that have been implemented for reservoir operations include:
Rule Type
Description
2 Reservoir Release to a direct diversion demand or carrier
6 Physical Exchange or Paper Exchange (bookover)
9 Release for target contents
16 Reservoir storage using direct flow diversion rights
Of the 146 reservoir operating rules used in the Rio Grande surface water model, approximately
100 rules were developed to represent to the practice of storing water under direct flow water
rights, then releasing this water at a later time to the same ditches under the rights it was stored.
This practice has been decreed for several ditches on the Rio Grande for storage in Santa Maria,
Continental and Rio Grande reservoirs, and for most ditches in the Conejos Water Conservancy
C:Acdss\Task6-l0.doc Prepare Operating Criteria File February 24, 2000 -Page 2 of 5
