South Platte Basin Roundtable Meeting
June 10, 2008
For any corrections, please contact Lisa McVicker at mcvicker(a,gwestoffice.net
Note correction to May minutes: The CEO of Colorado Corn is Mark Sponsler.
Bill Jerke calls meeting to order at 4:18.
I. 1) IBCC Report
Mike Shimmin presents IBCC report:
Met in Walden on 5/15: some of the issues covered included the CO AG Water
Alliance that presented a report which can be found at the IBCC website; the purpose
of the report is to stimulate discussion as per whether or not possible changes in the
law could aim towards reduced consumption on farms without dry up; no action
taken.
Education Committee presented to IBCC; website is excellent resource
--Presentations from North Platte-Shimmin shares how it is interesting to go to other
basins to learn about their issues and their realities; first meeting in North Platte Basin;
North Platte has simplest and most straight forward water supply in the states-most of
their water supplies governed by interstate decrees -thus, there is no water in the North
Platte Basin which is not ruled by interstate compacts; they know what they have and
what they can do with it and are not being pressed by intense growth as in rest of state.
--Pine beetle kill is affecting water supply; presentation from CSU scientist who has
compiled research; run-off patterns will change, however, it is difficult to discern the
extent thereof; could vary from increase of run-off in short period, but as trees start to
regrow that could change; therefore, difficult to reach a conclusion as per pine beetle
increasing water run-off.
--IBCC has attempted to formulate astate-wide vision on Colorado Water for 21st
Century; draft will be circulated.
--Sue Morea with CDM comments: We are looking at values, how do we look at
protecting environment, M&I, etc.; attempt is to try to capture all the values of C0; the
reason that we are developing strategies is how it will affect the state.
--Shimmin: as per IBCC: every member of the IBCC brings something different from our
roundtables; we all have something different to offer and focus is on what it will take to
get us there; keeps me going to the meetings to see if we can meet consensus on some
state-wide goals; no presupposed answer to this; this is a work in progress.
