Progress Report #2: San Francisco Sedimentation Proiect
January - Apri12006: As of December 2005, there has been more work to the arroyo
areas where the proposed catchments will be placed. There were
several site visits to the area of concern and after much discussion,
it was proposed by the Mr. Karl Svaty and road supervisors to
design a catchment sediment trap that can be emptied annually. It
was realized that such a catchment device would require annual
maintenance anti that such a device would help tremendously in
reducing the amount of sediment that would end up in the Acequia.
The County Road & Bridge Department has agreed to maintain the
catchments anm~ally. The benefit of keeping the sediment out of
the bar pits and ~~ut of the acequias will reduce the amount of
flooding damage that has been occurring in past years. The
maintenance of ~rhe catchments will also reduce the cost for acequia
maintenance, th~zs making small farming in our community more
viable. We are presently waiting on the design of the catchments
that will be used. to collect excess sediment from Karl Svaty of
MKEC Engineering Consultants, Inc. who is our design engineer
for the completi~~n of this project. It is expected that the project
will take a few nnore months than expected and will be completed
as proposed.
It was also a GPS mapping performed on the area and this occurred
in collaboration with Dr. Pete Magee of the San Luis Valley
GPS/GIS Authority. Costilla County has had many partnerships
with San Luis Valley GPS/GIS Authority in road studies and
culvert inventories.
