Progress Iteuort #1: Stan Francisco Sedimentation Proiect
Spring 2005: Secured funding; from: Colorado Water Protection Fund, Costilla
County Conservancy District, Costilla County Road & Bridge and
Colorado Acequia Association.
Discussed sedimentation issues with acequia users to locate and
identify most erosive area in Costilla County. The San Francisco
Acequia was selected by the Colorado Acequia Association as the
area in most need of sedimentation and flood mitigation.
The Colorado Acequia Association contracted with a hydrologist
and engineer, HydroDynamics, to complete a design for San
Francisco Acegi.iia.
Summer 2005: With completed design by HydroDynaanics, Colorado Acequia
Association worked with Los Valles Youth Corp personnel far
approximately one week to address erosion control along the
acequia. Applied membrane with dirt cover along acequia banks
and completed some grass planting as per design.
Costilla County Road & Bridge set guard rails along acequia and
roadside to prevent gravel from the county road from entering and
impacting the Sim Francisco Acequia. Please see attached photos.
Fa112005: Began construction of sediment traps and lined arroyo with rocks
to help decrease the velocity of the flowing water in the arroyos,
according to HydroDynamics design. The sediment traps also help
alleviate sedimentation build up that would eventually accumulate
in the acequia causing flooding which would in turn cause damage
to irrigable land and crops.
December 2005: Completed design recommendations as shown in the attached
report by Hydro]Dynamics. The Colorado Acequia Association
acquired a new hydroengineer to complete an erosion and
sedimentation mitigation/prevention design for an addition .5 -1
mile section alor-g the same county road running parallel to the San
Francisco Acequ~.ia.
Projected projeci~ completion date: September 2006.
