SPDSS Groundwater Technical Peer Review Committee Meeting Minutes
February 13, 2007
Page 7
vi. Question: Is GMS needed to run this model?
Response: No it is not, but can be helpful in visualizing model input and output.
vii. A discussion arose on the model purposes. The focus of the model will be on characterizing
the alluvial aquifer from a regional perspective and on gaining insights into stream
depletions/accretions and on alluvial/bedrock aquifer interactions. In addition, it will be
used by the State as a planning tool to help understand regional water issues in basin.
7. Upcoming SPDSS Groundwater Activities:
a. Phase 4: Stream gain/loss study; autumn water level measurements; calibrate alluvial model;
model post-processors developed.
b. Phase 5: Integrate groundwater model into StateMod; refine model enhancements tools.
III.USGS Denver Basin Modeling (Agenda Item C, S. Paschke)
Please refer to the USGS presentation for details (available on the CDSS website).
A. Model will address Denver Basin regional issues
1. Long-term effects of continued pumping on: water levels, streamflow, water budget.
2. Variation of aquifer properties across basin.
3. Model will provide further understanding of groundwater flow, water budget and storage in Denver
Basin aquifers.
4. Model is being developed in coordination with State agencies developing SPDSS.
B. Geology of Denver Basin area
1. Heterogeneous sandstone bedrock aquifers
2. Six primary aquifers
3. Intervening claystone layers
C. Model input data
1. Aquifer properties -hydraulic conductivity, storage. Based on pumping, lab tests, and model calibration.
2. Specific yield values -mean values calculated from numerous data. Sy values for each layer entered as
constant -mean of McConaghy, Robson, Castle Pines, Kiowa values; calculated mean is -27% to +21%
different from SB-5 values.
3. Aquifer stresses
